Ring My 'Bel'

2021-07-02

In 2007-08, the NHL's Montreal Canadiens had three(!!!) players from Belarus take to the ice wearing the bleu, blanc et rouge. The Kostitsyn brothers, Andrei and Sergei (remember them), as well as the all-time leading Belarusian player Mikhail Grabovski (296p in 534gp).

Mikhail Grabovski (2008)

Fast forward to the upcoming RHL season and there aren't even three players from Belarus in the league. There are only two. And as it turns out, they've both traded their country's colour of red and green for that of the New Jersey Devils.
After a trade on 29 June that saw them send prospect (and part time Krusty the Clown impersonator) Gavin Hain and a '22 7th round draft pick (Colorado's pick, which they obtained in trade with the Avs' three days previously for Nico Gross) to the San Jose Sharks for Maksim Sushko.

New Jersey is hoping that their newest acquisition can form some chemistry with fellow countryman Yegor Sharangovich.
Sharangovich seems like a lock to start the year on the main roster while Sushko likely will need another year in the minors to hone his skills. Even if that is the case, it may just be a matter of time before Sharangovich is feeding pucks to Sushko to put away.

And for anyone thinking that the chances of New Jersey matching the Habs feat of having three Belarusians on their NHL roster is improbable, maybe the Devils take a chance on goaltender Tikhon Chayka in the upcoming draft.

Notes:   New Jersey has been busy since the trading season opened up. Already they've made five deals, including the blockbuster that sees Dylan Larkin come over from Arizona in exchange for Kristian Vesalainen, Joel Kirivanta, Maxence Guenette and a 6th round pick this year. They also shipped out Ryan Getzlaf to Chicago for a 4th round pick and Dylan DeMelo and a 5th to Winnipeg for a 4th in seperate moves.
