Who will be the guy?
2026-06-17It's no secret that the Wild are entering a long overdue rebuild. After posing as a contender for the past 10 years, it's time to move on from the core that failed to deliver a championship. That doesn't mean that the general manager, SouCHe, will tear it all down. A couple of key trades, combined with a solid draft, could do the trick.
Talking about the draft, all eyes are on SouCHe, who'll talk 4th overall, a very interesting spot with how the draft is shaping up to be.
Top options explored by Minnesota are as follow :
- Gavin McKenna (LW): A dynamic, generational-level offensive talent who spent the season playing in the NCAA.
- Ivar Stenberg (LW/RW): The top European prospect, who posted historical scoring numbers in Sweden's SHL and starred at the World Juniors.
- Chase Reid (D): A highly-touted right-handed defenseman from the Soo Greyhounds (OHL).
- Caleb Malhotra (C): An elite, two-way center from the Brantford Bulldogs (OHL).
- Viggo Björck (C): A skilled Swedish center who has rapidly climbed draft boards.
- Carson Carels (LD): A highly-rated left-handed defenseman out of the Prince George Cougars (WHL).
Of course, we can expect McKenna to be gone at 1st overall. But aside from that, the draft could go in a lot of different directions. While the Minnesota Wild organisation wouldn't give away their plans, it's quite clear that they'll go best player available : "When you draft that high, you need to select the best player available, no matter positionnal needs" SouCHe said, following the combine that took place last week.
We won't have a long time to wait to get answers though, the draft being right around the corner.
