A new chapter for the Devils

A New Chapter for the Devils: Retooling After a Decade of Contention

After nine seasons at the helm of the Devils — and eight straight playoff appearances — it’s time for a shift in direction. For nearly a decade, this team has been built to contend. And we did more than just contend: in 2021–22, the Devils captured the ultimate prize, hoisting the Cup and delivering on the vision we set out with from day one.

Since then, we've remained in the thick of it — always competitive, always pushing. But even the most successful franchises eventually need to retool. The grind of cap management, aging contracts, and shifting timelines can’t be ignored. And now, heading into the 2025 offseason, it’s clear: the smart move is a short reset.

This isn’t a rebuild. The Devils have no interest in going dark for years. This is a strategic retool — one to two seasons, max — designed to re-align the roster around a younger core while keeping the culture of competitiveness intact.

That future starts with a rock-solid foundation. Aleksander Barkov continues to be one of the league’s elite two-way centers. Nikolaj Ehlers and Dylan Larkin bring speed, creativity, and leadership. On the back end, Zach Werenski anchors the blueline alongside Colton Parayko and Seth Jones, while Lane Hutson brings high-end puck-moving potential that’s already flashing in big minutes.

These are the players who stay — the pillars around which the next version of the Devils will be built.

But success tomorrow depends on investment today. That’s why this retool also means opening up space and opportunity for a promising wave of young talent. Prospects like Jiri Kulich, Jack Thompson, Matvei Gridin, Andrew Basha, Charlie Stramel, Drew Fortescue, and goaltender Alexei Kolosov represent the next generation. They’re not just names on a depth chart — they’re future contributors with real upside.

The retooling process will focus on making smart, forward-looking moves: acquiring picks and young players who fit our timeline, staying flexible with contracts, and ensuring that the next window of contention opens wide — and stays open.

Winning a Cup isn’t something you stumble into. It takes years of planning, gutsy calls, and timely adjustments. That same mindset is driving this next phase. We’ve done it once — and the goal is to do it again.

To the league: the Devils aren’t going away. We're stepping back strategically, setting the stage for another run. The names may change, but the expectations won’t. This is still a team built to compete — just with a new timeline and fresh momentum.

The Cup window may be temporarily closed, but the foundation for the next one is already under construction.
