Jets Execute Christmas Shakeup

2023-01-01

Brayden Point, the longest tenured Jet and last remaining player from the previous regime, went into this season knowing he’d be the subject of trade rumors this year, with his expiring contract and knowledge of the Jets long term plans and salary cap situation. On New Year’s Day, he received the call he knew was coming for over 6 months.

Point was dealt to the Arizona Coyotes along with 7th defenseman Erik Gudbranson, a 3rd and 6th round draft choice in exchange for former Jet Nico Hischier and a 4th round draft choice. Reaction around the league has been mixed. GM RBK held a press conference today to address the moves. “That LAK GM needs to worry about his own team. Figuring out how to not waste more years of his own top talent should be his priority, rather than worrying about the other teams.”

RBK was combative to open the presser. Once things calmed down, he went into further detail. “It was evident across the RHL that Point was available. We are tight against the salary cap for the future, and we saw an opportunity. Nico gives us equal production that Brayden brought to the team, and he brings the most important thing with him from Arizona: a modest salary and long term security. We are very happy to bring him back to the organization.”

Before the Point deal completed the Christmas shakeup, RBK engaged with the Vegas Golden Knights, St Louis Blues, and Pittsburgh Penguins to complete three other deals. The Jets sent 2022 trade deadline acquisition Brandon Tanev to the Golden Knights in exchange for Danny DeKeyser, a 4th, and 5th round selection in the 2023 draft. DeKeyser was immediately dealt to the Pittsburgh Penguins in exchange for a 2023 5t round selection. “This was our first trade with the new management of the Vegas Golden Knights and I must say it was a beyond pleasant experience. GM Justin “Guy Fieri” Cohen was a pleasure to deal with and despite our banter, I’d happily work with him again. Dealing with GM Radpex of Pittsburgh, as always, was easy and quick,” GM RBK commented when discussing these trades.

The final (or first depending how you look at it) move of the Christmas shakeup was a bittersweet one for Jets fans. The Jets shipped out incumbent captain Brian Dumoulin, a 2023 1st and 2023 7th round draft selections in exchange for Nick Jensen and Boone Jenner. “We saw an opportunity to improve our forward lines with Jenner and unfortunately, given our cap situation, Brian was a casualty. We were able to acquire Nicky who we viewed as a comparable player to Brian. We wish Brian nothing but the best with St Louis, or wherever he ends up.”

The Jets are very excited with their new pieces. They recently named Erik Johnson as the 2nd captain of the RBK era, and expect their new players to plug right into the lineup as the team gears up for the second half. RBK ended his presser in traditional fashion with a “Screw VideoJ”.
