Sens 2022 Draft Review

2022-07-23

OTTAWA, ON

Earlier today, Ottawa wrapped up their 2022 entry draft with 2 sixth round picks. After pick 182, the Sens brass packed up their draft table and left early, eager to start planning a busy free agency period. The club made 5 strong picks in this year's draft - perhaps a shift in focus to quality over quantity when compared to the 10 prospects picked up this time last year.

Introducing the newest faces to the Senators organization:

Conor Geekie - C - Winnipeg Ice (WHL)

May 5, 2004 - 6'4 203 LBS
Strathclair, MB, CANADA
Drafted 14th overall

Conor with one "n" has the frame to be the next Eric Lindros, but doesn't play like a power forward. Rather than rely on his physical tools to be effective on the ice, Geekie instead plays a smart, skilled 200 ft game that every team wants in a top 6 center. An offensive threat, especially as a passer, he scored 70 points in 63 games this year in the WHL as a 17 year old, and will look to challenge for the Memorial Cup on a strong Ice team next season. Geekie is probably 2 years away from NHL action, but he's one of the prospects with the highest floors this draft and will be a key part of the Senators' core in the years to come.

Gleb Trikozov - F - Omskie Yastreby (MHL)

August 12, 2004 - 6'1 185 LBS
Omsk, RUSSIA
Drafted 46th overall

Gleb Trikozov is a talented playmaking winger whose draft stock probably fell a little due to the current political situation in Russia. Undeterred by current events, the Senators swung for the high upside pick in the second round, hoping to have found a top 6 forward later than they should have. Trikozov scored 1.29 points per game in the Russian junior league last season, and also spent some time in the VHL with the pros.

Michael Fisher - D - St. Mark's School (High School)

May 2, 2004 - 6'2 198 LBS
Westborough, MA, USA
Drafted 71st overall

Inspired by his impressive combine performance, Ottawa traded a 4th and a 5th to draft defenseman Michael Fisher early in the third round. Unrelated to Carrie Underwood's husband, this Mike Fisher dominated the high school circuit this season, scoring 50 points in 28 games as a defeseman. He is committed to Northeastern in the fall, where the Sens will be able to evalute his performance against stronger competition and get a clearer picture of his long term potential.

Anson Thornton - G - Sarnia Sting (OHL)

June 28, 2003 - 6'4 194 LBS
Oshawa, ON, CANADA
Drafted 166th overall

After a long wait, Ottawa returns in the 6th round to pick but Anson Carter. Carter went undrafted last year probably because he got no ice time due to the pandemic, but he was signed to an NHL contract last fall after a strong training camp performance with the Arizona Coyotes. Carter was Sarnia's backup this season in the OHL, but was traded just before this draft to Barrie who hopes he will be their stater. Quality minutes will reveal just how good this Jamaican goalie could be.

Nikita Novikov - D - Dynamo Moskva (KHL)

July 25, 2003 - 6'4 207 LBS
Moskva, RUSSIA
Drafted 182nd overall

Despite being drafted in the NHL, Novikov went undrafted in the RHL last season. Since then, he suited up for 32 regular season and 9 playoff games in the KHL as an 18 year old, and the Sens took notice. Novikov is a strong, reliable defenseman with a big frame who could make an impact in the NHL.
