Breakdown of first two rounds of draft

2022-07-11

So I thought I would take a look at who appeared to get the best value in the draft if we assume that the NHL got all of their picks right since they spend millions of dollars scouting and we just spend some time googling. The way this will work is this: Shane Wright was picked 1st overall in our league by Chicago. As we all know, he fell to Seattle at 4. Thus, Chicago gets a score of -3 because they drafted him 3 spots earlier than the NHL. With that information, let's look at which team got the most and least value for their picks, and which players rose and fell the most. I'm just looking at the RHL's first 2 rounds since that is what we did without the NHL's help.

BEST PICK

Arizona's selection of Maveric Lamoureux.

Maveric was drafted out of the QMJHL at 56 by Arizona, with the 24th pick in the second round. In the NHL he was selected 29th overall, remarkably also by Arizona. This was RHL's Arizona's only pick in the first two rounds and looks to be a home run based on value drafting him nearly a full round later. At 6' 7", the worst case scenario for Arizona is he can play on their basketball team and maybe win a championship that way.

In addition, his parents still love each other https://nypost.com/2022/07/08/maveric-lamoureuxs-parents-make-out-at-2022-nhl-draft-in-viral-video/

WORST PICK

Columbus Blue Jackets selection of Vladimir Grudinin

Grudinin was selected in the RHL at 63 out of the Russian junior league with the second to last pick of the second round. He was selected in the NHL by Carolina at pick 156, deep in the 5th round. Scouting reports had him as a defenseman with good 4 way movement but having some difficulty gathering loose pucks. He also supposedly has great hands and is able to steal the puck and cut off lanes with ease. I've seen him project as a second line defensemen and as someone who doesn't really have it with some concerns about translating to the NHL. Only time will tell if Columbus missed at 63 or Carolina got an absolute steal at 156.
