Western Conference Final Recap

2022-05-29

Western Final

Winnipeg Jets - 1 @ Arizona Coyotes - 3

  • Series tied 3-3

"Corner a dog in a dead-end street and it will turn and bite" - Chinese proverb

The Arizona Coyotes staved off elimination and will now do battle with the Winnipeg Jets in a winner-take-all Game 7.

The Coyotes steeled themselves for Game 6 and found a way to land the Jets, winners of three straight. With the win, Arizona is now 3-0 in elimination games in these playoffs. They were down 3-2 in their series against Edmonton in Round 1 but fought back to win games 6 and 7.

The Coyotes success and failure during their run has been closely tied to the play of Connor Hellebuyck. In their three losses against the Jets, he's posted a 4.00 GAA and .862 SP%. In order to stand a chance they were going to need their MVP of the postseason to regain his form.
He was up to the task, turning aside 25 shots in the game.. He was especially sharp in the third period where he steered aside all 9 shots he faced. The Jets caught the Coyotes on their heels and had control of the puck most of the period but Hellebuyck never faltered.

Also crucial to the 'Yotes win was the fact they were able to put more than 2 pucks past Tuukka Rask for the first time since their Game 2 victory. Conor Sheary, Tyson Jost, and Rickard Rakell had the Arizona goals with Sam Gagner notching his first of the playoffs for Winnipeg.

THREE STARS

Connor Hellebuyck (ARI): 25 saves, .962 SP%
