Western Conference Final Recap

2022-05-27

Western Final

Winnipeg Jets - 4 @ Arizona Coyotes - 2

  • Winnipeg leads series 3-2

The Jets seemingly have solved the riddle of Connor Hellebuyck and find themselves a win away from a berth in the Stanley Cup Final.

In 15 games, Hellebuyck and the Coyotes had only surrendered 4 goals in a game three times. That was up until the last three games against the Jets where they've allowed 4 in each game.
In doing so, the Jets have rallied from being down 2-0 in the series to now having a 3-2 lead and a chance to advance when they play Game 6 in Glendale.

In Game 5, the Jets opened with three unanswered goals to fly out to a 3-0 lead on just 13 shots. However, Kevin Labanc's torrid posteason run continued with back to back goals to cut the Jet's lead to 3-2.
The Coyotes would go on to fire 16 shots on Tuukka Rask in the third period (33 total), pushing for the equaliser. Rask was up to the challenge, and Kyle Connor would add an insurance marker on the powerplay with Andrej Sekera off for hooking late in the frame.

Notes: After going 19-14-33 in 86(!) games between three teams (ANH, VGK, ARI) during the regular season, Labanc has gone a point per game to lead the Coyotes in postseason scoring (9-9-18).
If Winnipeg advances, it will pit the two highest point getting teams in the league against each other (Winnipeg - 113, New Jersey - 111)
