Playoff Post-Mortem, New York Islanders

2022-05-26

Series Summary

The Panthers outscored the Islanders 23 – 12 in the series, but still took 7 games to close it out. In fact, the Islanders held a 1-0 lead heading into the third period of game 7, but then surrendered a pair of power play goals in the first five and a half minutes of the third to lose the series.

Who Showed Up

Tomas Tatar (5G / 7A) led the team in scoring at a point per game pace.

Who Didn’t

As Jack Campbell went in the second round, so went the Islanders for the first six games of the series. In his three wins, Campbell posted a 0.972 save percentage, while in his three losses, he posted a 0.829 and was pulled twice. Hard to blame him for posting a 0.931 in game 7 though, especially when both goals came on the powerplay.

Offseason Preview: UFA

The Islanders have 7 pending UFAs on their pro roster: Corey Perry, Ryan Suter, Paul Stastny, Adam Larsson, Jordie Benn, Jack Campbell, and Braydon Coburn. With Devan Dubnyk headed for their reserve list after only playing 4 AHL games this past season, it seems unlikely that the team can go into the season with a Anton Forsberg – Spencer Martin tandem, so look for them to re-sign Campbell.

Offseason Preview: Entry Draft

There are rounds after the first? The Islanders sure don’t seem to think so. As of today, they’ll pick twice in the first, both late in the round with them owning their own and the Ducks’ picks.
