Western Conference Final Recap

2022-05-21

Western Final

Arizona Coyotes - 3 @ Winnipeg Jets - 2

  • Arizona leads series 2-0

The Coyotes survived their penalty problems and head back to Arizona with a 2-0 series lead.

Arizona took four straight minor penalties, including two in the first overtime, but outlasted Winnipeg in double OT. Conor Sheary etched his name in Coyotes lore, scoring the game winner just over a minute into the second overtime.
On the play, Sheary had deflected a shot by Kevin Labanc that Tuukka Rask got a piece of but wasn't able to control the rebound. Sheary grabbed the loose puck and shoveled it home before being mobbed by his teammates.

Winnipeg failed to convert on any of their 5 powerplay opportunities in the game. Maybe it was the fact that they weren't used to having the man advantage, with only 13 previous attempts in the 13 games up to this point. On top of that, their top line of Kyle Connor, Elias LIndholm and Mikko Rantaned was shut out.

Curtis Lazar's promotion to the Jets' third line had the desired effect, as they were the only line that mustered any offense in the game and got Winnipeg to overtime. Lazar had the opening goal of the game in the first period, while Tyler Bozak tied the game in the third.

For the Coyotes, Andrej Sekera scored his first of the playoffs and Vladimir Tarasenko picked up his eighth. Johnny Gaudreau collected two apples to move into a tie with Dylan Larkin (NJD) for second place in playoff scoring with 17 points.
