Anaheim Aquisition Antics

2021-08-22

Not only did the Anaheim Ducks win the President’s trophy last season, but they were primed to have an impactful offseason during draft time. They entered into the draft with the 9th overall pick as well as the 27th overall. With Anaheim already making seven 1st round selections over the last three years, adding two more seemed to make Anaheim’s future really look bright! However, some twists (including lime in his whiskey) and turns with selections in the draft may have shaken up exactly how the draft turned out for the Ducks. Let us take a deeper dive into GM VideoJ’s first round of drafting.

With the 9th overall pick, GM VideoJ assumed the other GMs were aware that he was supposed to receive Brandt Clarke. For some strange reason VideoJ’s obsession with Graeme Clarke, Brandt’s older brother, was not respected and he went to the New York Rangers, which would start a lifetime feud with new GM NewStarRising. After this horrible revelation, GM VideoJ quickly pivoted to wanting to draft Mason MacTavish, due to his obsession with alliteration and the fact that he plays for the Peterborough Petes. Unfortunately, as usual, things did not go Anaheim’s way. GM Arcele, VideoJ’s most hated rival, took him at #8. With Simon Edvinsson dropping the ranks, and no other clear cut option for Anaheim to select, Mr. Edvinsson was selected at #9. Scouts say Simon is a very raw prospect with the tools to be a stud defender. With the cupboards in Anaheim full of offensive threats and a stud goaltender, taking a defenseman with the 9th overall pick was an organizational decision that just makes sense. It did help that he draws comparisons to Victor Hedman as well!

As the draft went on, several names on Anaheim’s list were being snagged that they had hoped would drop to #27. Logan Stankoven was a name that just stunk, sorry stuck with GM VideoJ over the last couple of months. Seeing him ranked all over the board, and mostly in the late 1st to 2nd round, the Ducks believed he was a shoe-in for them at 27. Drawing comparisons to Brad Marchand made this an obvious homer pick. Apparently new GM LedTasso didn’t get the memo that VideoJ is supposed to get the best names in the draft, as he drafted Stankoven at 17. As the Maple Crown Royal started to flow more aggressively, GM VideoJ poured another drink as Raty and Coronato were both selected just prior to #27. Anaheim’s last remaining target in sight of Francesco Pinelli (Whom he just liked because the last name sounds like Spinelli from Disney’s “Recess”) was selected directly in front of him at #26 and this caused GM VideoJ to reluctantly scramble.

While his vision was blurry, as was his mind, he frantically was looking over his lists for a draft target. Luckily, GM Souche of the Minnesota Wild sent him an offer he could not refuse. For moving down just 10 spots, Anaheim received a 3rd round pick in 2022, as well as a 5th round pick in 2021. This gave GM VideoJ time to think and select a new target at #47. What antics will occur in the 2nd round and beyond? Stay tuned!
